Headaches and Migraines

At West Chiropractic we see a huge number of patients with headaches. Often patients describe headaches that they have suffered for over 10 years and have simply learnt to live with them.

A tension headache can be pain at the back of the head, side of head in the temple region, band across the front of the head, pain behind the eye, pain on one side or a global headache. These types of headaches usually arise from tension in the muscles around the head. We often have patients describing a stressful time and everything around the neck and shoulders feeling tight and painful and going up to the head.

A migraine is different, often more severe and can cause nausea, sensitivity to light and noises as well as balance problems. Migraines are extremely debilitating and can interfere with daily life.

What causes Headaches and Migraines?

Headaches can be caused by:

  • Forward head carriage – the muscles around the neck will be stressed and shoot
    pain in to the head

  • Poor posture

  • Old traumas

  • Dehydration and nutrition

Our job at West Chiropractic is to find out the exact cause of the headaches to get
rid of them.

How does Chiropractic treatment help with Headaches and Migraines?

A lot of our patients are surprised and then relieved to learn that headaches can often arise from the neck and Chiropractic treatment can help by working on the neck. Once a thorough examination and x-rays (if clinically justified) have been taken your Chiropractor will tell you the cause of the headaches and outline how to treat the headaches. Treatment will involve spinal adjustments to the fixated areas in the neck to relieve pressure on the nerves and muscles, massage therapy to the inflamed muscles and spinal traction rehabilitation to reduce a forward head carriage and aim to correct posture.

Your Chiropractor will prescribe you exercises to strengthen the neck and reduce the forward head posture.
